I am so glad you asked me this because I actually went through the same thing.
First of all, it depends on what year you are. If you’re in year 9 there is still time to decide whether or not you want to stay in the advanced class. If you’re in year 10 year 11, I suggest you really think it through.
On my first day in the advanced class in year 9 I hadn’t completed the holiday homework because I lost it. By the time I found it it was the day before school so I just left it. Ever since then I fell behind in class and it sort of really affected my self-esteem with not just maths, but science, gradually English and others.
I stopped trying and immediately labelled myself as dumb. It didn’t help that I go to one of the top performing schools in Victoria EVERYONE IS SO DAMN SMART AND STUDIES SO HARD. I stopped trying in school. I did that for 3 years and now I am in year 12. I TOTALLY TOTALLY regret it. Even though I am trying my best to catch up I know I still have a long way to go. Thank goodness all my teachers are absolutely lovely and in the 2 subjects that I am bad at; methods and chemistry I have gotten tutors and am self studying my ass off.
ANYWAY. My point is DON’T BE LIKE ME. I lost interest in methods which was sad as maths used to be my best and favourite subject! I started mucking around in class. What I wished I had done was ask the teacher for help, also, tell your parents if you haven’t already, that you’re struggling. Parents are supportive no matter what, and chances are, they probably see the hard work you’ve put in and know that you’ve tried your best.
If you have older siblings who can help you, even better.
You seem different from me, you’re working hard right? Unfortunately methods is sort of a subject where sometime working hard isn’t enough. You really have to be able to apply what you have learnt. That’s where I get lost. I don’t know about you.
Maybe you might just have to think about the subject a little differently. If you’re doing the homework and everything but still feel like you can’t catch up to your classmates, discuss how you’re feeling with your teacher. They might be able to give you extra help or work that will help you understand.
NEVER NEVER EVER think that you’re dumb. BECAUSE YOU’RE NOT. My friend hits me whenever I say I am. Getting into the advanced class alone was A BIG ASS ACHIEVEMENT.
About considering not to do methods.. No one can really tell you whether or not to do it. If you’ve done methods for awhile, you have probably realised what it’s like. 3/4 isn’t much different to 1/2. It’s the same shit just a bit harder.
Me and several of my friends have all repeated 1/2 Methods last year and the year before. They found that it really helped them grasp the idea better. Maybe that’s what you need?
You could try that and if you really think you don’t want to do it then drop it. Year 12 is really about doing subjects that 1) are pre requisites for Uni courses or 2) are stuff you actually like.
Methods is a pre req for A LOT of uni courses so if you don’t know what you want to do I would suggest you don’t drop it. Talk to your careers person.
I, also don’t know what I want to do. Unfortunately, that means I have to do Methods (and Chemistry) because they “open a lot of doors”.
In good time you will find what you are passionate about so in the meantime try your best in everything you do and take all opportunities as they come.
There are hurdles in life and unfortunately for me and you, methods is probably one of them. Try not to approach it in a negative way or it can really bring you down like it did for me.
Anyway I’m sorry for writing such a long answer. I hope it helped. If you leave in Melbourne I might be able to recommend some
Methods tutors for you I am studying methods as we speak. :D
